More about this tool

A contact list that was put together from several sources almost never looks consistent. One row has the phone number as 212-555-0142, the next as +1 (212) 555 0142, another as 2125550142. Addresses are typed in capitals, in lowercase, with and without the state, and the same customer shows up twice.

This tool fixes all three problems at once. Phone numbers are brought into one US format, addresses are standardized to the familiar "42 Oak St, New York, NY 10001" pattern, and rows that turn out to be identical after cleaning are removed. The first occurrence of each row is always kept.

Everything happens on your own computer. You open the tool in your web browser, choose your Excel or CSV file and save a cleaned copy. The original file is never changed and nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Entries the tool cannot read with confidence โ€” a phone number with too few digits, an address without a city โ€” are not guessed. They stay exactly as they were and are listed on screen so you can check them yourself.
