- Or fills empty cells with the value from the cell above โ ideal for grouped reports where a name is written only once
- Dates and numbers that are copied down keep their format
Example
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| Row with no values at all | deleted |
| Region: (empty) under "West" | Region: West (fill down) |
| Phone: (empty) | Phone: N/A (fixed value) |
How it works
Good to know
- Always keep a copy of your original file as a backup and check the cleaned copy before you use it.
- Cells that contain only spaces count as empty.
- Rows that are completely empty are never filled โ they are either deleted or left as they are.
- Reads .xlsx, .xls and .csv files and saves the result as a new .xlsx file.
- Only the first worksheet is cleaned. Other worksheets and title rows above your table are kept unchanged.
- Values, dates and number formats are kept. Cell colors and fonts are not carried over to the cleaned copy.
- The tools are provided free of charge and "as is". We have built and tested them with great care, but we cannot guarantee that every entry is recognized or changed correctly. More about this tool
Empty rows and columns sneak into spreadsheets through copy-paste, exports from other programs or lists that were combined from several files. They break sorting and filtering, and blank cells cause formula errors and gaps in pivot tables.
This tool cleans that up in one step. Completely empty rows and columns are deleted. Blank cells inside your table can be filled with a value you choose, or with the value from the cell above โ the classic fix for reports where a customer or region name only appears in the first row of each group.
You open the tool in your browser, pick your Excel or CSV file, choose what should happen and save a cleaned copy. Your original file is not changed and nothing is uploaded.
